内容简介:

Natural disasters wreak economic damage and financial distress on victims. In addition to traditional disaster-relief channels sponsored by the government and charities, commercial loans offered by lending firms play a key role in assisting victims to recover from disasters. However, these loans come with costs and may exacerbate borrowers’ financial distress, resulting in loan delinquency or default because of victims’ impaired ability to repay. In this paper, we study whether lenders’ use of AI in the lending process can benefit borrowers who suffer from natural disasters in terms of reducing delinquency. Collaborating with a leading credit scoring company, we track borrowers’ loan applications and lenders’ use of customized AI solutions in assessing loan risk. We find that borrowers applying to AI-empowered lenders fare better in reducing delinquency under natural disasters. Notably, such a disaster-mitigating effect is more pronounced for borrowers with lower credit scores. We explore possible mechanisms under play and discuss the implications of our findings.  演讲人简介
