Competitive video games have become a prominent aspect of contemporary leisure activities. A key principle in designing these games is to guarantee that players with comparable skill levels have fair chances of winning — a property known as game balance. Game balance is crucial to the commercial success of modern games. A well-balanced game encourages strategic exploration, sustains player engagement, and fosters healthy competition. Achieving holistic balance in competitive video games is challenging due to the asymmetric environments, diverse game options, and intricate counterplay dynamics. In this work, we consider a two-stage optimization problem to find the balanced game design which ensures that no game option is overwhelmingly dominant or systematically disadvantaged. We analyze the computational complexity of the problem and investigate its structural properties. Motivated by the hardness of the problem, we develop a novel method to obtain high-quality approximate solutions. We conduct numerical experiments to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed methodology.

演讲人简介:

Xinyi Guan is an Assistant Professor at Hong Kong Polytechnic University Department of Logistics and Maritime Studies. Her research centers around developing practical solution methodologies for optimization problems in operations management. She obtained her PhD degree in operations management from UCLA Anderson School of Management.
