内容简介:
This study sheds new light on the origins of the gender competitiveness gap by leveraging alcohol’s ability to suppress norm obedience. We randomly assigned volunteer participants drinks containing either alcohol or a placebo before administering tasks designed to measure competitiveness. While we successfully replicated the well-established gender gap among sober participants, the gap disappeared among those who were intoxicated. A separate norm elicitation experiment showed that sober participants adhered to gender norms, whereas intoxicated men and women exhibited no change in their perception of competitiveness norms—suggesting that alcohol reduces conformity to social expectations. Our analysis indicates that if neither gender conformed to social competitiveness norms, the observed gap would be only one-third of its current size.
