内容简介:

Overcoming failure to achieve success can yield critical knowledge for learning how to perform well. Yet, this paper documents a curse of failure phenomenon, in which people dismiss advice from those who have overcome failure to achieve success, compared to advice from individuals who have consistently achieved success. That is, people prefer to seek advice from those who have achieved consistent success over those who have overcome failure to achieve success (Studies 1 & 2). This preference is suboptimal because (a) advice from those who have overcome failure to achieve success is more transferable and more actionable (Study 3 & 4), and (b) people learn and perform better after learning from such advice (Study 4 & 5). We argue that this preference leads to advice-seeking choices that favour less actionable and transferable advice, thereby failing to help improve performance effectively. More broadly, we show that the dichotomous success–failure performance evaluation distorts social learning preferences and hinders effective learning from others.

董夏微，香港科技大学商学院管理系博士研究生。现已在 Journal of Personality and Social Psychology，Nature Communications, 以及 Social Psychological and Personality Science 以第一作者或合作者发表多篇论文，且在博士项目学习期间获得科研基金（Negotiation Team Resources Institute Research Grant）。主要研究课题为成功失败学习，地区文化差异，以及人机交互（human-robot interaction）的心理机制。
