The recent surge of geopolitical volatility makes it essential to understand how firms strategize when subject to geopolitical tensions. Building on organizational response to institutional complexity, we propose that firms affected by geopolitical tensions tend to adopt a political compensating approach to reconcile conflicting pressures from antagonistic political regimes. Specifically, they may curtail overt political engagements (board political representation) to alleviate foreign government concerns about excessive domestic control, and intensify covert political efforts (political networking activities) to preserve domestic government support while shunning foreign scrutiny. We corroborate two boundary conditions regarding affected firms' dependence on the foreign market and the domestic government. We find general support for our propositions in the context of the U.S.-China trade war based on Chinese-listed firms from 2015 to 2021.

演讲人简介：

付龙望是来自香港城市大学商学院管理系的博士，研究兴趣包括：战略领导力、公司治理、非市场化策略以及国际商务。具体研究项目围绕着多重治理主体间的互动机制展开，包含传统治理主体（例如：CEO、董事会、投资者）以及新兴治理主体（例如：媒体、政府、第三方评级机构）。多篇英文工作论文目前正处于Strategic Management Journal, Academy Management Journal, 以及Journal of Management Studies 返修阶段 (revise and resubmit)。另有中文研究成果曾发表于《管理世界》、《南开管理评论》。
