This paper studies temporary opportunity assignment as a source of employee productivity improvement. Specifically, it examines the impact of temporarily assigning employees to perform the same task under a high-opportunity context on their future productivity after they return to a low-opportunity context. Leveraging detailed transaction data and extensive interviews from a multi-store restaurant chain, we compare servers’ productivity before and after a temporary assignment to the lounge section—a high-opportunity context with higher potential for sales and tips. We find that the temporary assignment leads to an average increase in servers’ hourly sales in subsequent periods after they return to low-opportunity sections, and this increase appears to be caused by a combination of skill learning and motivation enhancement. In addition, the temporary opportunity assignment is associated with a lower exit rate for all treated servers. Our findings highlight opportunity assignment as a valuable managerial tool for fostering employees’ skill development, maintaining their motivation and improving long-term productivity.


演讲人简介:

周悦,美国密歇根大学罗斯商学院战略系教授。密歇根大学商业经济系博士。曾任马里兰大学罗伯特史密斯商学院助理教授。主要研究公司理论以及组织和制度经济学理论在公司战略, 竞争战略, 国际战略, 平台战略, 组织结构和复杂系统方面的应用。在战略管理领域国际顶刊发表论文十余篇。现任美国管理学会(AOM)战略管理(STR)部门执行委员会委员,“Management Science” 和“Strategic Management Journal”副主编, 以及“Organization Science”和“Strategy Science” 编委会委员。曾任“Global Strategy Journal”特刊主编之一。读博士之前就职于世界银行国际金融公司, 从事亚洲东欧及非洲各发展中国家国企改革和基建项目民营化的工作。
