内容简介:
Numerous crowdfunding campaigns fail on their first attempt and subsequently attempt relaunches. Yet, little is known about what turns a failed campaign into a success. A phenomenon unique in crowdfunding is that backers provide diverse opinions and emotional expressions through backer-generated content (BGC), forming an information environment for struggling fundraisers. Integrating social support theory with problemistic search theory, this study theorizes BGC in two forms, informational support and emotional support, and examines how informational support in BGC reduces fundraisers‘ information asymmetry, while emotional support fosters a community-oriented environment. These two types of support thus prompt a digital entrepreneurial problemistic search process characterized by greater search distance, defined as the extent to which fundraisers in relaunched campaigns revise their business ideas through IT artifacts and make changes to platform core design features. In turn, search distance enables fundraisers to address prior shortcomings, better align offerings with platform and market expectations, and signal proactive engagement to subsequent backers, thereby increasing the likelihood of successful relaunch. Furthermore, the indirect effect of emotional support on relaunch success is stronger when initial failures are more severe. The proposed moderated mediation model is tested and supported using a dataset of 3,079 technology-related Kickstarter relaunches. The results are robust across multiple tests, and additional analyses further confirm that fundraisers actively internalize BGC in their problemistic search. This study provides valuable insights into how crowdfunding, as an IS-driven platform ecosystem, enables digital entrepreneurs to recover from failure. It also makes theoretical contributions to the literature on crowdfunding platforms, user-generated content, online social support, and digital entrepreneurship, while offering practical guidance for platform design and ecosystem development.
