内容简介:

A long-standing debate asks whether major social changes are driven by structural forces or by individual leaders. Using the case of Frederick Douglass‘s oratory in 19th-century America, we show that a charismatic leader‘s words alone can spur significant social and political change. We compile a new dataset of nearly 2,000 speeches delivered by Douglass and link the timing of these speeches to county-level outcomes. Using a staggered DID design and textual analysis with LLMs, we find that Douglass‘s visits significantly shifted local political preferences, altered media narratives, and mobilized collective actions such as enlistment and petitioning. We find evidence consistent with several mechanisms underlying these effects, including persuasion, mobilization, information diffusion, issue salience and priming, and the credible messenger effect. We also document spatial and media spillovers from Douglass‘s appearances while placebo tests using other speakers‘ events and outcomes on women‘s issues show no significant effects. This study contributes to the literatures on leadership and charismatic influence, media and political communication, collective action and public goods provision, and historical political economy.

欧阳鑫，清华大学经济学研究所博士候选人，哈佛大学访问学者，清华大学未来学者，研究方向为企业创新，领导力和不平等问题。师从孙震教授和Richard Freeman教授，博士期间在《管理世界》等国内外期刊发表论文4篇；另完成多篇工作论文，其中2篇在《Strategic Management Journal》的返修过程中。致力于跟踪因果推断前沿和搭建大型数据库，曾在哈佛大学、清华大学、香港中文大学（深圳）等多地进行学术讲座，完成/正在构建中国专利经济价值数据库、中国报纸数据库、中国传教士数据库等数据集。
