内容简介:

This study focuses on blockchain as an ecosystem innovation that has the technological advantage of altering inter-organizational operational paradigms and processes. Because of the benefits and challenges associated with blockchain implementation, managers tend to delay adopting it unless they have a long-term perspective. Hence, we use upper echelons theory (UET) and the ecosystem perspective to highlight the importance of having managers with a long-term view of blockchain implementation. We provide novel insights by examining managerial myopia and equity-based incentives as key antecedents of blockchain implementation. In addition, we examine key ecosystem characteristics that act as moderators, affecting the extent to which blockchain value can be realized. Specifically, we examine three aspects of ecosystems: industry peer blockchain implementation, geographic proximity, and supply chain network centrality. Empirically, we test the hypotheses using a dataset of Chinese A-share firms listed on the Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Exchanges. The results show that managerial myopia hinders, whereas equity-based incentives facilitate, blockchain implementation. Favorable ecosystem characteristics for blockchain implementation generally mitigate the negative effects of managers’ short-term perspective. These findings extend the relevant literature on blockchain implementation antecedents and contribute to the UET and ecosystem perspective.
