We model forces driving wealth inequality and the wealth racial gap in a non-stationary setup for the past six decades in the U.S., including dynamics in earnings, heterogeneous returns, differential saving rates and regime switches in income taxes. We use the dynamics in wealth inequality as moments to estimate importance of different channels, and do not take any year as a steady state. In the estimation we carefully calculate effective tax rates along the income distribution taking into account changes in government transfers and public expenses. We find that return heterogeneity play a significant role in explaining the evolving racial gaps in wealth.

演讲人简介：

Mi Luo is currently an Assistant Professor at the Department of Applied Economics, Guanghua School of Management at Peking University. She is dedicated to the research of macroeconomic household finance, focusing on topics such as: wealth distribution, inequality, and intergenerational mobility in wealth, retirement savings, and interaction of the consumption-saving tradeoff with other variables including health and leisure. She is now an associate editor at the Journal of Asian Economics. Prior to Guanghua, she graduated from New York University and worked at Emory University.
