On June 19th, 2021, a group of international students of MIB, IMBA, undergraduates programs from Antai College, Shanghai Jiao Tong University took a trip under the organization of CDC Office to Jinshanzui Fishing Village, which is the ONLY fishing village in Shanghai. Despite of the rainy season in June, the trip was still attractive to around 40 ACEM international students from 15 countries long staying in Shanghai due to the Covid-19. Students experienced local fisherman’s life, tasted local cuisines and visited several museums to learn about Chinese folk and sea culture evolution from ancient to modern times.
Jinshanzui Fishing Village has a history of more than 6000 years. People there lived by the sea and depended on the sea to make a living since thousands years ago. It is the earliest fishing village along the coast of Shanghai and the last fishing village in Shanghai. The village was home to generations of fishermen, and the old fisherman’s house attracts tourists across China.
The students made sticky rice cakes on their own after the demonstration of a local fishwoman who are expert in making sticky rice cakes. After that, they visited old fisherman’s house and learned about the industrious and brave fishermen who went out to catch fish many years ago despite harsh conditions. The tour guide made a detailed introduction of ancient life in fishing village and Mazu culture. Students then visited Mazu Palace, and many of them were amazed by the legend of Mazu.
Through this trip, international students learned how to make sticky rice cakes and how life in ancient fishing village was like. They showed strong interests in Chinese Folk Culture. These kinds of activities will attract more and more foreign students to learn about traditional Chinese culture. We believe that in the future, with the expanding of ACEM international students’ activities, more and more international students will have chances to experience the Chinese culture and traditions, know deep about modern China, love living and studying in China.
