According to the Financial Times, in the 2017 and 2018 top business schools Asia-Pacific ranking, the 1st of the ranking is Shanghai Jiao Tong University: Antai College of Economics and Management.

In 2021 the QS World University Rankings by Subject included 501 business schools worldwide of which 104 are Asian business schools. Mainland China is the best-represented region with 18 colleges in the ranking.

In this article, we will discuss the criteria for ranking, with reference to the QS World University Rankings.

Introducing the QS World University Rankings by Subject

This system of rankings evaluates the world’s top universities, covering 51 disciplines, grouped into 5 broad subject areas. The rankings aim to help students choose from the world’s leading schools in their subject field.

How are the rankings of top business schools achieved?

Each of the subject rankings is based on four metrics. The first two include the academic reputation and reputation among employers. The others are research citations per paper and h-index, which assess the impact of research in the relative study field.

1. Academic reputation

QS's global survey of academics has been the core of the QS World University Rankings by Subject since its establishment in 2004. In 2021, over 100,000 academics worldwide were involved.

The academics need to provide their name, contact details, job title and institution. Within their academic areas, respondents are requested to list excellent domestic (up to 10) and international (up to 30) institutions. The academics are not allowed to select their own institution.

2. Employer reputation

The QS World University Rankings by Subject incorporates employability as a key factor in evaluating universities. In 2021, the research draws on nearly 50,000 survey responses from graduate employers worldwide.

The employer reputation survey works in a similar way to the academic survey. Employers are asked to select outstanding domestic and international institutions. The employers are also asked to choose the disciplines from which they prefer to recruit.

3. Research citations per paper

Citations per paper are measured for this ranking, rather than per faculty member.

A minimum publication threshold is set for each subject to avoid potential anomalies (small numbers but highly cited papers). The QS World University Rankings by Subject” adapted the minimum publications threshold and the weighting applied to the citations indicator.

The adjustment is to best reflect prevalent publication and citation patterns in a given discipline. All citations data are sourced from Scopus, the world's largest abstract and citation database, covering 15,000 scientific, technical, and medical journals and  spanning for five years.

4. H-index

Since 2013, the h-index has been incorporated in the rankings. The h-index is designed to measure the productivity and impact of the published work of a scholar. The index is measured according to the academic’s cited papers and the number of their citations in other publications.

The index was suggested by Jorge E. Hirsch (a physicist at UCSD) as a tool for determining theoretical physicists’ relative quality, and stands for Hirsch Index.
