While artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are poised to automate a variety of tasks that are currently performed by human workers, many complex and high-stake decisions are often solved through human beings and AI working cooperatively. It is thus important to understand appropriate human-centered design approaches to AI that amplify human capabilities while preserving the sense of agency and autonomy. Here, we experimentally compare and test two alternative AI advice provision timing designs (i.e., independent timing design versus dependent timing design) in a medical diagnosis context. Particularly, participants in the independent timing condition have the chance to independently evaluate diagnostic tasks at hand before obtaining AI advice, whereas those in the dependent timing condition do not. We show that participants in the independent timing condition make more accurate and calibrated diagnosis decisions, and consider and assess the possibility of more alternative diagnoses compared with those in the dependent timing condition. Overall, our results demonstrate that offering AI assistance at an appropriate time point is critical to decision augmentation.
Jiamin Yin is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Information Systems and Analytics, School of Computing at the National University of Singapore. She received her bachelor’s degree in Management Science from Renmin University of China. Jiamin’s research focuses on addressing important challenges and issues in intelligence augmentation (IA) and human-computer interaction (HCI) with a focus on the healthcare context. Her articles have been published in MIS Quarterly, Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association (JAMIA), Journal of Medical Internet Research (JMIR), Marketing Letters, and Frontiers of Business Research in China. Her research has also appeared in the proceedings of premium IS conferences, such as the International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS) and the Pacific Asia Conference on Information Systems (PACIS).
