  The global revenues of e-sports will grow to $1.1 billion in 2020. Unlike most traditional sports, e-sports in video games do not rely on physical abilities, thus greatly reducing the biological gap between men and women, making it possible for men and women to compete on a level playing field. However, the gender gap in the e-sports industry is still striking. One possible explanation is that gender stereotype effects may exist that hinders women’s performance. However, previous studies on stereotype effects are largely in offline contexts and not in digital worlds. It remains a question whether the same stereotype effects carry on to digital worlds.  We analyze a unique video game dataset that contains player-versus-player (PVP) fights in a popular online video game. Our analysis relies on a distinct feature in the video game context, i.e., each person has two gender identities, one real and one virtual. We exploit this feature in designing our identification strategies and economic analyses. Our results find that men tended to exert more effort and thus perform better when they perceived that their opponents were female, even if their opponents were male. In other words, men were discriminating against their effort, depending on the gender of the opponent they faced in competition. By contrast, women were insensitive to the gender identity of their opponents, as they displayed comparable performance levels regardless of whether they were competing against men or women.  The study provides important theoretical contributions and policy implications.

  Zhang Cheng is a professor at Department of Information Management & Information Systems, Fudan University, China. His research interests include IT business value, data-driven business value and platform strategy. His works have been published by more than 40 prestigious journals including MIS Quarterly, Journal on Computing, Journal of Management Information Systems, Production and Operations Management, Marketing Science and Journal of Marketing. He has served in the editorial review board of Journal of Association for Information Systems, Journal of Global Information Management, and IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication.
