In this talk, I will discuss how I use various operations research techniques to address complex healthcare problems and explain why domain knowledge is essential to healthcare research. First, I will share our work in using stochastic optimization to address surgical scheduling problems. We show that the omission of practical behaviors may result in an overestimation of the effectiveness of surgical scheduling optimization. Second, I will share my experience in developing modern solution approaches that incorporate mathematical optimization, machine learning and data analytics for complex operational problems and medical decision-making problems in healthcare. I will discuss an ongoing research on using reinforcement learning (RL) for real-time case coordination in radiology. Our preliminary experience with a policy-gradient RL shows very promising results. I will also talk about how we are using data analytics and optimization to personalize radiation therapy plan for prostate cancer patients. Our preliminary analysis indicates a significant difference between proton therapy and photon therapy in their impacts on patients’ post-treatment quality of life.
Miao Bai is a postdoctoral research associate in the Kern Center for the Science of Health Care Delivery at Mayo Clinic. He obtained his B.Eng. with first class honors in Industrial and Systems Engineering at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2011 and his Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering at Lehigh University in 2017. His primary research interest is to leverage mathematical optimization, machine learning and data analytics to develop analytical and algorithmic solutions for complex problems in healthcare systems and medicine.
