Abstract:

The current paper proposed and examined a longitudinal model examining how and when a leader’s narcissism – the admiration and rivalry dimensions - is linked to leader’s interpersonal liking of his/her newcomer, and subsequently leader-member exchange and newcomer job performance. Using data from 159 leader-newcomer dyads collected over five waves, we found that a leader’s narcissistic admiration was positively related to his/her initial liking as well as changes in his/her liking of the newcomer. In contrast, leader narcissistic rivalry had no effect on leader initial liking of the newcomer or changes in his/her liking. In addition, when the leader perceived high (vs. low) performance potential in the newcomer, his/her narcissistic admiration had stronger positive association with his/her liking of the newcomer as well as the increase in liking over time. However, when the leader perceived high (vs. low) performance potential in the newcomer, his/her narcissistic rivalry had stronger negative association with his/her liking of the newcomer as well as the increase in liking over time. Finally, we found that the effects of leader narcissistic admiration and rivalry on newcomer job performance were mediated by leader’s initial liking of newcomer, its changes overtime, and subsequently leader-member exchange between the leader and the newcomer. Theoretical and practical implications of the current findings were discussed.
