I have studied employee proactivity for more than one decade. Employee proactivity (i.e., self-initiated anticipatory action that aims to change and improve the situation or oneself) has been associated with positive work outcomes such as task performance and citizenship behaviors. My initial work examined the antecedents and consequences of proactive person-environment fit behavior (i.e., changing the individuals’ fit with the organization environment) such as feedback seeking and relationship-building behavior. Later, my research interests evolved to examine the effects of proactive work behavior (i.e., changing the internal organizational environment such as taking charge and voice) on work outcome. In this research seminar, I will share my research findings on these issues and discuss future directions for employee proactivity research.
