Abstract:

What is Strategy? How would you make strategic decision under uncertainty? This seminar will introduce a general framework of a strategy course, the way the course will be taught, and some of the important concepts in strategy such as corporate strategy, competitive strategy, industry analysis, PEST model, value chain, resource-based view, blue ocean strategy, to name a few. The seminar is also highly interactive. Students will be the center of the seminar to discuss the issues relevant to the course and make interesting debate. In addition, students are also welcome to provide input in designing the course together with the faculty.

 

Guest speaker

Weilei (Stone) Shi is an Associate Professor of Strategy at Zicklin School of Business, City University of New York. His research centers on the interaction between strategy and international management. Specifically, Stone is interested in examining M&As and alliances from both temporal and network perspectives. His papers have been published in top tied journals such as Strategic Management Journal, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management, Journal of Management Studies, Organization Studies, Academy of Management Perspective, and Asia Pacific Journal of Management. He has been awarded the Outstanding Reviewer Award in the Academy from 2005 to 2007. He is currently on the Editorial Board of Journal of Management Studies, Asia Pacific Journal of Management, Academy of Management Perspective. His research also gains significant exposure in China. He has frequently contributed articles in CEO & CIO, CEIBS Review, Economic Highlights, Global, and Contemporary Economic Research.

Before he entered into the academy, Stone works for Roland Berger Strategy Consultancy--a top notch global strategy consulting firm, in its Shanghai (Great China) office. During his consulting career, Stone has steered projects in retailing, automobile, and machine cutting tool industries. He is specialized in foreign firms' market entry strategy, M&A and strategic alliance, post M&A integration, organizational restructure, competitive analysis between domestic and foreign firms in China.

Stone's teaching interest centers on corporate strategy, international management, strategy implementation, strategic alliance, and M&A. He has more than 10 years teaching experience and receives high evaluation both from his peers and his students.
